Vesal
Arabzadeh was born in Tehran.
He acquired the elementary knowledge of playing setar from Ali
Bayani. Then he mastered the whole knowledge of Iranian
traditional music´s Radif (Mirza Abdolah´s Radif) from Daryoosh
Talaii; meanwhile, he was trained to play some old pieces from
the mentioned instructor. He benefited from Mohammad Reza
Lotfi´s teachings during his two travels to Iran in the 70s. In
1376, he began to practice and further his knowledge of the old
and contemporary pieces of A.Saba, S,Hormozi, Y.Forootan,
H.Alizadeh, M.R.Lotfi, etc. from Masood Shoari, and then,
familiarising himself with the method of Saba´s setar playing,
he took lessons from Ramin Jazayeri. In 1378, he made
acquaintance with Keyhan Kalhor and that made him pay more
attention to improvisation in playing the setar and perceive the
importance of solo performance in Iranian music.
In 1380, he entered The Music Faculty of Soreh, during which he
passed the specialized instrument course(the setar) with Hamid
Sokooti. Afterwards, he was trained to play some of Parviz
Meshkatian´s pieces from Behdad Babaii and got familiar with
other technics in setar playing. He mentions that B.Babaii
ultimately helped him to gain more insight and understanding
into music. Infact, he feels indebted to M.Shoari, B.Babaii, and
K.Kalhor.
In 1380, at the college student`s music festival, he obtained
the first prize in playing the setar, and from 1379 until 1382
was the permanent member of The Music Protection and Research
Center. There, he proceeded with Hormozi´s method of setar
playing, which, from years ago, he had much interest in, and
tried to imitate Hormozi´s method as best as he could.
Furthermore, he published some articles on Iranian traditional
music in music journals and daily newspapers and is one of the
first music critics who has been writing various critical essays
concerning Iranian music since 1377. He collaborated with
M.Shoari by doing research for his book, Ganjine ye setar, and
became more proficient in writing the musical notes of the
classic works and pieces of setar playing.
In 1385, he founded the music band, Mahtabroo, and performed in
some concerts in collaboration with the mentioned band in Fajr
music festival, Tehran, and other provinces.
He has been training a lot of art students in setar playing
since 1375, and has been instructing at music faculties and
universities since 1382.
Currently, he studies
for an M.A degree in playing Iranian
music at The State University of Fine Arts in Tehran.
